José Mourinho’s defensive tactics at Benfica are getting a lot of attention after their match against FC Porto. Known for his “parking the bus” strategy, Mourinho’s approach has got people talking about whether it still works in today’s football. Even though people criticize it his defensive style is still what he does best as a manager.

  • Mourinho’s tactics against Porto showed his usual defensive game plan.
  • People are wondering about where Mourinho will end up and if his tactics still work.
  • More and more people are questioning if Mourinho’s style would work in the Saudi League.

The Criticism of Mourinho’s Defensive Tactics

The game between FC Porto and Benfica has got everyone on social media talking about José Mourinho’s way of playing. His “parking the bus” strategy stopped Porto from getting any good chances in the first half but not everyone likes it, like this one big Saudi football account that posted they don’t want Mourinho bringing that kind of football to the Saudi League.

Even though lots of people don’t like it Mourinho has always played this way but some people think maybe it’s too old school for how football is played now.

Mourinho’s Current Role at Benfica

José Mourinho came back to Benfica in September 2025 to start something new. He didn’t do so good at Fenerbahçe where they missed out on Champions League, and then he took over at Benfica. His contract goes until June 2027 but after losing 1-0 to Chelsea in Champions League people are saying maybe he’s too stuck in his ways and doesn’t fit modern football anymore.

He likes to use 4-2-3-1 formation and still wants his team to defend deep and be organized instead of playing fancy.

Saudi League’s Ambitious Managerial Pursuits

The Saudi Pro League is getting noticed cause they’re trying to get big name managers, like Al-Hilal who are looking for someone new. Jorge Jesus got replaced by Mohammed Al-Shalhoub as temporary manager and they’re trying to get Carlo Ancelotti with lots of money. This shows how the league is getting bigger and wants to bring in the best managers.

Nobody knows what Mourinho will do next while he tries to make his old school style work in football that’s changing a lot.
