Rebeca Bernal Joins Manchester United Women
Rebeca Bernal has now completed her move to Manchester United Women from Washington Spirit, with the 29-year-old signing a three-year agreement as the club adds more experience before the WSL season gets under way. The deal is believed to be worth up to £300,000.
Bernal made it clear just how much the switch means to her, calling the privilege of representing Manchester United “truly incredible”. She also spoke warmly about the environment she is joining, describing Eva Olid as an excellent coach and saying she wants to bring her experience and passion to help push the team towards its ambitions.
What Bernal Brings to United’s Squad
Bernal arrives as a useful addition because she can operate in the centre of defence or midfield, giving Manchester United Women experienced cover in two important areas without the need for grand promises about an immediate starting role.
Matt Johnson summed up the thinking behind the deal by saying Bernal brings quality, leadership and experience to a young, exciting squad. He also said she has the determination to succeed and the winning mentality needed to thrive at Manchester United. Bernal is the club’s fourth signing of the summer, following Andrea Medina, Janina Leitzig and Monica Jusu Bah.
Bernal’s Career Background and WSL Significance
Bernal’s background explains why United were keen to bring her in. Before her spell with Washington Spirit, she made 223 appearances for CF Monterrey, then went on to help the Spirit win the Challenge Cup. At international level, she has 78 caps for Mexico and has scored nine goals.
One of those goals was a big one: the winner against Chile in the 2023 Pan American Games women’s football final. Once she makes her league debut, Bernal is set to become the first Mexican player to feature in the Women’s Super League.
