Chelsea have completed the signing of Chavarría from Rayo Vallecano, with the Spaniard arriving as a 28-year-old left-back on a long-term deal. The fee has not been officially disclosed, but the package is believed to be €19m plus another €2m in add-ons.
Chavarría joins after establishing himself as a regular in Spain’s top flight, and the contract until 2031 shows this is more than a short-term squad patch. It is a commitment to a player who has been playing week in, week out.
Chavarría kept his first reaction simple after signing. He called Chelsea “one of the biggest clubs in the world”, said the move was “a dream” and added that he is prepared to work hard to help the team achieve success.
Chavarría’s Route Through Spanish Football
Chavarría’s path to Chelsea was not the usual straight line through a major academy. He began at UE Figueres before moving to UE Olot in 2018, where he made 52 appearances and built up the kind of senior experience that mattered later in his career.
Real Zaragoza signed him in August 2020, and two full seasons there earned him the step up to Rayo Vallecano in August 2022. That move gave him his shot in La Liga, and he turned it into a proper run as an established first-team player.
Rayo got solid value from him, too. In 2025/26, he made 33 La Liga appearances, 29 of them starts, and played 2,683 minutes while adding one goal and two assists. Rayo finished eighth with 50 points, so Chelsea are bringing in a player who was not just present at that level but trusted in a competitive side.
What Chavarría Adds to Chelsea
Chelsea are getting an experienced left-back with recent top-flight minutes rather than a project signing. His 2025/26 league numbers point to a defender who stays busy: 30 tackles, 102 clearances and 13 successful crosses across the campaign.
That profile fits a full-back who can handle the defensive side and still offer something going forward. Chavarría has shown a willingness to overlap, underlap and step into midfield, which gives him a bit more variety than a purely touchline-hugging option.
Chelsea do not need to frame this as a guaranteed starting spot to see the value in it.
