Aston Villa are exploring a possible move for Leon Goretzka as discussions continue over whether a contract can be agreed. The midfielder could be available on a free transfer, but key terms still need to be settled before any move can progress further.
- Goretzka could be available to Aston Villa on a free transfer.
- Contract length remains a central point in the ongoing discussions.
- No deal has been agreed, and a medical is yet to take place.
Leon Goretzka’s Current Aston Villa Situation
Leon Goretzka has emerged as a possible Aston Villa target, with Unai Emery’s side still working through the details of a potential agreement.
Villa could look to make progress over the weekend, although the situation remains open rather than advanced.
Why Aston Villa Could Look to Goretzka
Villa’s interest makes sense in the context of their midfield picture. Amadou Onana’s ACL injury during the World Cup has left a need for cover, and the reported departures of Youri Tielemans and Enzo Barrenechea have reduced the options in central areas.
Aston Villa had also explored a loan move for João Palhinha before turning to Goretzka as a possible option. That suggests Villa are actively looking for midfield reinforcements rather than moving opportunistically.
Goretzka could give Villa an experienced presence in that part of the pitch. His physicality, leadership and box-to-box running would appear to fit what Emery may want, while his late runs from midfield could add another useful dimension if the move progresses.
Contract Terms and Goretzka’s Next Step
The biggest question now is whether Aston Villa and Goretzka can bridge the gap on contract length.
Reports suggest Goretzka is expecting a net salary of €7 million per season and a €10 million signing-on fee, so those figures could prove to be sticking points rather than signs of an agreement. Until the wider terms are settled, there is no reason to treat the move as anything more than a developing negotiation.
Goretzka has at least remained active recently, which helps explain Villa’s interest. He played 1,947 Bundesliga minutes and scored five goals in the 2025/26 season, showing he could still offer presence and output from midfield if the remaining terms are agreed.
A medical would also need to be completed before any transfer could move towards official confirmation.
