Arsenal’s decision to terminate Reiss Nelson’s contract by mutual consent has opened the door for the winger to head back to Rotterdam on a free transfer. Having completed a medical and agreed terms, he now looks set for a reunion with Feyenoord that could give his career the reset it has been missing.

  • Arsenal have terminated Nelson’s contract with immediate effect, making him a free agent.
  • Nelson previously spent the 2021/22 season on loan at Feyenoord, reaching the Europa Conference League final.
  • A return to Rotterdam could provide a fresh opportunity for consistent senior minutes.

Reiss Nelson’s Current Feyenoord Situation

Reiss Nelson is set to rejoin Feyenoord after completing a medical and agreeing terms following his Arsenal departure. The move is in its final stages, and while the last administrative steps are still being completed, he looks firmly Feyenoord-bound.

For Feyenoord, the appeal is clear. Arsenal’s immediate mutual termination of Nelson’s contract has left him available as a free agent, meaning the Dutch club can secure his services without paying a transfer fee. For Nelson, it offers a quick route into a familiar environment after a period of limited opportunities.

A Return to Rotterdam and Familiar Surroundings

Nelson’s next move is a return to familiar surroundings. His 2021/22 loan spell at Feyenoord yielded four goals and seven assists in 32 appearances across all competitions, and he was part of the side that reached the 2022 Europa Conference League final.

Rotterdam also provided Nelson with some of the most regular senior football of his career, making it a familiar setting for the next stage of his career.

Nelson’s Arsenal Chapter and Next Opportunity

Nelson leaves Arsenal after an 18-year association with the club, having come through the academy and made 68 youth-team appearances before signing his first professional contract in December 2016. His first-team record stands at 90 appearances, eight goals and nine assists, with the 2020 FA Cup and Community Shield wins in 2017 and 2020 forming part of that long spell in north London.

Recent loans at Fulham and Brentford underlined his need for a clearer path to regular first-team involvement. At Brentford last season, he made 13 appearances and only three starts, all of them in cup competitions. A return to Feyenoord will not guarantee a starting place, but it could offer Nelson a much cleaner chance to rebuild his momentum and play consistently once again.
