Arsenal’s Julián Álvarez Plan: Gyökeres Plus €80 Million Could Shape a Major Move

Arsenal could be weighing up a big move for Julián Álvarez, with a package involving Viktor Gyökeres and around €80 million reportedly one possible route. There is no confirmation of a formal bid, an agreement or advanced talks.

  • Arsenal could explore a player-plus-cash move for Julián Álvarez.
  • Any package involving Gyökeres and around €80 million remains unconfirmed at this stage.
  • Barcelona’s position still looks uncertain, while Álvarez’s preferred destination may be a major factor.

Arsenal’s Possible Move for Julián Álvarez

Julián Álvarez was involved in Atlético Madrid’s 2-0 La Liga win over Málaga on 19 August, which at least underlines that he remains part of the current first-team picture as this story keeps moving. Two days later, Gyökeres featured in Arsenal’s 3-0 Premier League victory over Coventry City, giving this rumoured structure a very live feel on both sides.

What makes the idea interesting from Atlético’s perspective is that Gyökeres would not simply be a makeweight in the deal. He could arrive as an established attacking replacement, which would be crucial if Atlético were ever pushed into considering a move for Álvarez rather than just cashing in on him.

Barcelona’s Position Could Still Complicate the Deal

Barcelona should not be written off too quickly, even if Arsenal may feel there is a possible opening in the market. Álvarez has been linked with a preference for Barcelona, and that leaves one of the biggest questions in the whole situation untouched: whether he would actually want a move to the Emirates Stadium.

Barcelona have also been linked with Gyökeres as an alternative attacking option, which adds another twist to the same striker market. It does not confirm any Arsenal-Atlético swap, but it does show how the futures of both forwards could be tied into the same late-window shuffle.

What the Rumour Could Mean for Arsenal and Atlético

Gyökeres’ value to Arsenal is easy to see after a debut campaign that brought 21 goals in 55 appearances across all competitions. Álvarez, meanwhile, recorded eight La Liga goals in the 2025 league campaign and added another 10 across the Champions League league phase and play-offs, so neither side would be discussing a minor piece in any potential arrangement.

Atlético could view Gyökeres as an immediate solution if Álvarez’s situation genuinely changes, especially if replacement options become harder to secure later in the window. In that scenario, Arsenal would be offering more than money, while Atlético would be looking at a striker who could step in quickly.

There is still a major gap between an interesting concept and a deal that can actually materialise. Atlético’s willingness to negotiate, the true valuation of Álvarez and the player’s preferred destination would all need to become much clearer first, particularly after Miguel Ángel Gil Marín previously insisted the club did not want to sell him at all.
