With the transfer window down to its final days, Atlético Madrid have moved to shut down the noise around Julián Álvarez by making clear he remains part of their plans. Barcelona remain at the centre of the speculation, while Arsenal look more like a possible fallback than an equally advanced route.

  • Miguel Ángel Gil Marín said Julián Álvarez had been poorly advised in trying to force a move to Barcelona.
  • Diego Simeone insisted there is “no uncertainty” over Álvarez’s situation and said he remains important to Atlético’s objectives.
  • Arsenal could become relevant only if Álvarez moves away from a preference for Barcelona.

Julián Álvarez’s Current Situation at Atlético

Julián Álvarez is still very much an Atlético Madrid player and featured in the club’s 2-2 La Liga draw with Villarreal on 23 August, a timely reminder that he has not been pushed to one side as the market drama builds. Atlético’s public line is that the forward remains central to the season ahead, not a player being prepared for an immediate exit.

Miguel Ángel Gil Marín made that stance clear by saying Álvarez had been poorly advised in trying to force a move to Barcelona. Gil Marín also said Atlético would continue to support him and help him reach his full potential, underlining that the club still sees him as part of their first-team plans.

Diego Simeone struck a similar tone, saying there is “no uncertainty” around Álvarez’s situation and describing him as important to Atlético’s objectives. That backing also fits with his recent performances, with Álvarez contributing across La Liga, the Champions League and the Copa del Rey for Atlético while remaining an active top-level option for club and country.

Barcelona are the real pressure point here because Atlético do not want to strengthen a direct La Liga rival chasing the same major honours. If Álvarez were to leave, a move abroad would appear easier for Atlético to accept than sending him to another Spanish heavyweight.

Arsenal’s place in the story is much more conditional. Andrea Berta’s previous role at Atlético helps explain why the London club can remain in the conversation, given he was involved in negotiating Álvarez’s contract after his arrival from Manchester City.

Arsenal are not on the same footing as Barcelona in this situation. Any serious route to north London would depend on Álvarez stepping away from a Barcelona preference first, rather than a deal being close or already agreed.

What Could Happen Before the Window Closes

Álvarez’s own position in the final days of the window is likely to shape what happens next. If he stays focused on Barcelona, Atlético’s resistance is unlikely to soften, given the club’s reluctance to hand a major rival such a significant player.

Atlético’s stance leaves an overseas alternative as the more realistic route if Álvarez changes course. With the window nearing its close, the situation remains unresolved rather than heading towards a settled exit.
