National League’s Ambitious Push for a Third Promotion Spot

National League CEO Mark Ives wants everyone to talk about adding another promotion spot to EFL League Two. This idea would help competition and give clubs more money and ways to grow. If they don’t deal with this soon it could take many years before anything changes.

Benefits of a Third Promotion Spot

Adding another promotion spot would be really good for a lot of reasons. More teams would have a real shot at moving up, since there’s lots of National League clubs that could do well in the EFL. When clubs get promoted, they make way more money from bigger crowds sponsorships and TV stuff. It also helps teams get better both on the field and behind the scenes.

Back in February 2025 the National League asked the EFL to think about this idea. Mark Ives says if they don’t deal with it quick it might take forever to happen. The idea is getting more popular and people like Jeff Stelling are saying it’s a good thing. Lots of people are talking about it in the news and showing how good teams from the National League can do when they move up.
