Ipswich Town 2-1 Sunderland: Jack Clarke's late winner seals opening-day victory

Ipswich Town opened their Premier League season with three points at Portman Road as Jack Clarke struck in the 90th minute to settle a tight contest after Sunderland had fought back level before the break.

Sunderland started with sharper territorial pressure in Suffolk, with Brian Brobbey and Trai Hume both firing wide inside the opening four minutes, but Ipswich still found the decisive moments in a 2-1 home win.

Emersonn Da Silva put the hosts ahead in the 24th minute, Nilson Angulo equalised in the 39th, and the match stayed level deep into the second half before Clarke settled it late.

For Ipswich, it was an opening-day result built less on controlling the ball than on punishing key errors and taking the clearer chances when they arrived.

Clarke settles a closely contested opening-day match

Ipswich served their first real warning in the seventh minute when Emersonn Da Silva got a header on target, a sign that the home side could threaten even while Sunderland were seeing more of the early ball.

The opening goal arrived in the 24th minute from exactly that kind of sharp transition. Julio Enciso intercepted Luke O’Nien’s pass on the halfway line, drove towards the edge of the box and squared for Da Silva, who finished to give Ipswich a 1-0 lead.

Sunderland did not lose their foothold after going behind. Their pressure from set pieces kept Ipswich pinned back for spells, and the equaliser came in the 39th minute when Angulo brought the visitors level at 1-1.

The second half never quite developed into one-way traffic for either side. Sunderland made attacking changes from the hour mark onwards, while Ipswich had to adjust after Enciso went down injured in the 70th minute and was replaced by Clarke a moment later.

That change proved decisive. With the match heading towards a draw, Sunderland lost the ball again late on after a pass from Omar Alderete was intercepted, and Clarke finished in the 90th minute from Saša Lukić’s assist to seal the points.

Ipswich make their chances count

The contrast between Sunderland’s share of the game and Ipswich’s use of the biggest moments explains the result. Sunderland finished with 63 per cent possession, 432 passes and five corners to Ipswich’s 37 per cent, 220 passes and three corners.

Yet the shot quality favoured the hosts. The teams were level on three shots on target each, Ipswich held a 0.912 to 0.687 edge in expected goals, and Da Silva was the most efficient finisher on the pitch. He produced two shots on target, scored once and accounted for 0.507 xG before going off in the 66th minute.

Enciso was central to most of Ipswich’s best attacking work before his substitution. He created the opener, took three shots of his own and registered 0.199 xG, giving Ipswich a direct route into dangerous areas even in a match where they spent long periods without the ball.

Clarke then supplied the late twist from the bench. Introduced in the 71st minute, he needed only 20 minutes on the pitch to score the winner, underlining how little margin for error there was for Sunderland once Ipswich found one more transition to attack.

Ipswich also had to defend resolutely to make that efficiency matter. Issa Diop made 10 clearances, Jacob Greaves added eight, while Leif Davis and Dara O’Shea each produced seven. Sunderland’s pressure was real enough, but Ipswich’s back line absorbed it without allowing the game to tilt into a stream of clear chances.

What comes next for Ipswich Town and Sunderland?

Ipswich take three points from their opening Premier League fixture and will next host Manchester United at Portman Road on Sunday 30 August, with kick-off at 16:30 BST.

There is encouragement in the way they won as much as in the result itself, although the defensive work required to protect the lead leaves areas to refine.

Sunderland’s next match is away to Fulham on Sunday 30 August at 14:00 BST. They showed enough to compete at this level, but must turn that platform into more decisive attacking output.
