Anderson Talisca scored the only goal in Austria as Fenerbahçe completed a controlled 3-0 aggregate win over Sturm Graz and booked a Champions League play-off against Lyon.
Fenerbahçe arrived in Graz with a valuable two-goal cushion and left with another win, another clean sheet and their place in the final round of Champions League qualifying secured.
Talisca’s second-half penalty decided the second leg on Tuesday night. The 1-0 result completed a 3-0 aggregate victory after Fenerbahçe had won the first meeting 2-0 in Istanbul.
It was not a spectacular night built around wave after wave of attacking football. It did not need to be. Fenerbahçe managed the situation, limited Sturm’s route back into the tie and found the goal that removed any remaining doubt.
Talisca ends Sturm Graz’s hopes
Sturm had to score at least twice to force extra time, but the home side could not turn that urgency into enough clear openings. AS reported that the Austrian team managed only two shots on target, while the better chances fell to the visitors.
The match remained goalless through the first half and into the second, a pattern that suited Fenerbahçe far more than their hosts. Sturm’s task became even harder when Talisca converted from the spot in the second half, extending the Turkish side’s aggregate lead to three.
That goal continued an excellent European qualifying run for the Brazilian. Talisca also scored in the first leg and has now found the net in each of Fenerbahçe’s four Champions League qualifiers this season. His route to becoming a decisive figure in Istanbul began with Talisca’s move to Fenerbahçe, and he is now delivering in the matches carrying the highest early-season stakes.
Fenerbahçe did not allow the contest to become chaotic after going ahead. They saw out the remaining minutes without conceding and gave new signing Vedat Muriqi his debut from the bench late in the second half.
Fenerbahçe’s big names provide control
The visitors started with an experienced, high-quality attacking unit. Kerem Aktürkoğlu, Marco Asensio and Mason Greenwood operated behind Talisca, while N’Golo Kanté and Matteo Guendouzi gave the side a strong central platform.
That selection mattered even in a game when Fenerbahçe did not need to chase the score. Keeping several creative threats on the pitch meant Sturm could not simply commit everyone forward. The hosts had to respect the visitors’ ability to break and create, which helped Fenerbahçe keep the tie in the controlled rhythm they wanted.

What comes next: Lyon await in the play-off
Fenerbahçe are now one tie away from the 36-team Champions League league phase. Their opponents will be Lyon, who recovered from a 2-1 first-leg defeat against Sparta Prague by winning the return 3-0 in France and advancing 4-2 on aggregate.
The first leg is scheduled for Tuesday 18 August in Istanbul, with the return match in Lyon on Wednesday 26 August. Both games are listed by UEFA for 21:00 CET.
Lyon represent a clear step up. Fenerbahçe’s attacking group should face more pressure without the ball, while the defence will have to deal with a team arriving after scoring three times in a must-win second leg. The Turkish side will, however, take confidence from keeping Sturm scoreless across both matches and from Talisca’s four-game scoring streak in qualifying.
The stakes are straightforward. The winner will reach the Champions League league phase, while the defeated team will move into the Europa League league phase. For Fenerbahçe, the controlled work in Graz has earned the opportunity they wanted: two matches against Lyon with a place among Europe’s leading clubs on the line.
