Lyon overturned their first-leg deficit in convincing fashion, beating 10-man Sparta Prague 3-0 to progress 4-2 on aggregate in the UEFA Champions League third qualifying round.
Lyon complete the turnaround
Paulo Fonseca’s side began the night one goal behind after Sparta Prague’s 2-1 first-leg victory, but there was no sense of caution in their response. Lyon pushed forward from the opening stages and brought the tie level after 20 minutes through Ernest Nuamah.
Corentin Tolisso’s shot was kept out by Jakub Surovčík, only for Nuamah to turn the loose ball into the bottom corner. It was a reward for Lyon’s early intent, although Sparta had already offered reminders of their threat. John Mercado headed narrowly wide and Josimar Alcócer saw an effort blocked before the hosts made the breakthrough.
The evening swung further towards Lyon in the 33rd minute. Adam Ševínský brought down Loïs Openda as the striker drove towards the penalty area, and referee Szymon Marciniak showed the Sparta defender a straight red card. The visitors reached the break only 1-0 down on the night, but their one-goal aggregate advantage had disappeared and they faced the entire second half with 10 players.
Lyon stayed patient after the restart and Tyler Morton increasingly took control. The midfielder forced a save from distance before striking the crossbar from outside the area, giving Sparta goalkeeper Surovčík an increasingly busy spell.
The decisive second goal arrived in the 66th minute. Tolisso helped work the ball into the six-yard area and Ainsley Maitland-Niles finished from close range. Six minutes later, Morton found the top-left corner from the centre of the box to make it 3-0 and remove any remaining doubt about who would progress.
Nuamah and Morton make their mark
Nuamah’s return to the starting side gave Lyon a direct runner on the right and produced the goal that settled the early nerves. The Ghana winger attacked space decisively and reacted first when Tolisso’s effort was saved. Transfer Site has previously looked at Nuamah’s route from the Right to Dream academy through Nordsjaelland to Lyon, and this was the type of high-pressure European contribution that underlines his value.
Lyon’s front line of Nuamah, Openda and Malick Fofana also gave Sparta several different problems. Openda stretched the defence through the middle and drew the foul that led to Ševínský’s dismissal, while Fofana repeatedly tested Surovčík from the left. The red card undeniably changed the contest, but it came after sustained pressure from a Lyon side playing with far greater urgency than in Prague.
Morton’s second-half display was another major positive. He had already gone close twice before scoring, and his willingness to shoot prevented Sparta from simply crowding the six-yard box. Tanner Tessmann provided balance alongside him, while Tolisso’s influence was evident in the first two goals. The captain’s initial shot created Nuamah’s opener and he supplied the final pass for Maitland-Niles.
Maitland-Niles’ finish was also a product of Lyon’s ability to stretch the reduced defence. His run carried him into a scoring position on the right side of the six-yard box, reflecting the attacking width he regularly provides in Lyon’s system. With Sparta forced to protect the centre, Lyon moved the ball effectively enough to create openings around them.
Sparta’s resistance falls short
Sparta’s approach caused some discomfort before the opening goal. Mercado, Alcócer and former Lyon midfielder Adam Karabec all found space in the attacking third, and Karabec headed over shortly before the dismissal. Those moments showed why the Czech side had arrived with a lead rather than merely hoping to protect one.
Ševínský’s red card changed what was possible. Sparta reorganised, defended their area and relied on Surovčík to keep the tie alive, but the pressure became difficult to contain. Once Maitland-Niles put Lyon ahead on aggregate, the visitors had to find a goal while playing a man down. Morton’s strike quickly made that task even harder.
The 3-0 scoreline therefore tells two connected stories: Lyon produced the proactive home performance the situation demanded, while Sparta’s early dismissal left them unable to maintain the intensity and counter-attacking threat that had worked in the first leg.
What comes next for Lyon and Sparta Prague?
Lyon now face Fenerbahce in the Champions League play-off round. The first leg is in Istanbul on 18 August, with the return in Lyon on 26 August. The winners will enter the 36-team league phase, so Fonseca’s side remain two matches away from securing a place in the main competition.
The standard will rise again against Fenerbahce, but this comeback gives Lyon a strong platform. Nuamah and Fofana added pace, Morton carried a goal threat from midfield and the hosts kept a clean sheet even before the numerical advantage arrived.
Sparta Prague’s Champions League campaign ends at this stage, but their European season continues. As a defeated team from the league path, they move directly into the UEFA Europa League league phase.
