Fenerbahce won at Parc Olympique Lyonnais on Wednesday night to take the playoff tie 3-2 on aggregate, with Vedat Muriqi and Archie Brown scoring in a decisive first-half spell before Malick Fofana gave Lyon hope after the break.

The second leg began level after the 1-1 draw in Istanbul, setting up a contest in which Fenerbahce had to turn early pressure into a decisive advantage.

Fenerbahce strike twice to take control in Lyon

Everything was level on aggregate at kick-off, and Lyon produced the first warning sign when Fofana forced a save in the eighth minute. Fenerbahce did not retreat after that. Oğuz Aydın tested the goalkeeper on 13 minutes, Brown followed with an effort of his own six minutes later, and the visitors kept building pressure around the Lyon penalty area.

The breakthrough arrived in the 24th minute when Muriqi put Fenerbahce ahead on the night. Four minutes later, the tie swung much more sharply. Greenwood helped create the opening and Brown finished to make it 2-0, giving the Turkish side a two-goal cushion in the match and full control of the aggregate score.

Lyon still carried danger before the interval. Fofana remained lively, and Tyler Morton forced a save in the 41st minute, but the home side went into the break two down and needing a much stronger second half.

That response did come, at least in part. Fofana pulled Lyon back into the contest in the 61st minute and gave the hosts a route back into the tie. Paulo Fonseca then turned to his bench as Lyon pushed for a second goal, and the pressure continued into stoppage time with late attacking moments from Kaïl Boudache and Zachary Athekame before one final corner.

Fenerbahce still held firm through that late spell. Lyon found moments of pressure and kept the tie alive until the closing seconds, but the equaliser never arrived. The match finished 2-1 to Fenerbahce on the night, enough to send them through 3-2 on aggregate.

Muriqi, Brown and Greenwood make the difference

Fenerbahce were not the side that dominated possession, but they were the side that made the decisive first-half spell count. Muriqi supplied the opening goal, Brown had already shown his intent before the break with an earlier effort on target, and Greenwood kept appearing in the attacking phases that unsettled Lyon.

Brown’s second goal was especially important because it changed the shape of the tie so quickly. Instead of protecting parity, Lyon suddenly had to chase two goals on the night. Greenwood’s assist for that finish captured Fenerbahce’s sharpness in the final third during their best spell of the game.

The numbers support that reading. Lyon finished with 57 per cent possession, but Fenerbahce still led the shot count 11-9, had more efforts on target (6-5) and won more corners (7-5).

That mattered once Lyon started to see more of the ball after the break. Fenerbahce had already done the damage, and they retained enough attacking presence to stop the game becoming a siege played entirely in their own penalty area.

What comes next for Lyon and Fenerbahce?

Fenerbahce move on from this Champions League playoff tie with a 3-2 aggregate victory, while Lyon’s run ends here.

The visitors return to domestic action away to Samsunspor on Sunday 30 August at 19:30 BST. They can take confidence from the clinical first-half burst that settled this tie, and from the fact they remained dangerous even without controlling possession.

Lyon are back in Ligue 1 on Saturday 29 August, when Le Havre visit at 19:45 BST. Fofana’s goal and the late pressure offered some evidence of a response, but Fonseca’s side now need a quicker start and more end product after leaving themselves too much to recover.
