Andreas Helmersen’s 117th-minute winner sent Bodø/Glimt into the Champions League play-offs after a breathless second leg at Aspmyra.
Bodø/Glimt beat Union Saint-Gilloise 3-2 after extra time on Tuesday, completing a 6-5 aggregate victory in the UEFA Champions League third qualifying round.
Ole Didrik Blomberg and Jens Petter Hauge twice put the Norwegian side in front during normal time, but goals from Guilherme Smith and Mohammed Fuseini kept Union alive. The visitors were reduced to ten men in stoppage time at the end of normal time before Helmersen settled the tie in the 117th minute.
The result leaves Kjetil Knutsen’s team one round away from the league phase. It also provided another dramatic European night at Aspmyra for a side whose high-energy football and imposing home form have become familiar themes.
Bodø/Glimt edge a five-goal second leg
There was nothing to separate the teams after the 3-3 draw in Belgium, and the first half in Bodø ended without a goal. The contest opened up after the break.
Blomberg made the breakthrough in the 51st minute with a powerful strike from outside the penalty area. The ball hit the underside of the crossbar and crossed the line, giving the hosts the first advantage of an absorbing evening.
Union responded rather than retreating. After threatening with two headers, the Belgian side drew level through Smith in the 61st minute. His finish from the edge of the area restored parity both on the night and across the tie.
Hauge put Glimt back in front 15 minutes later. Helmersen kept the move alive after goalkeeper Vic Chambaere had made an important save, recovering possession and laying the ball back for Hauge to finish. A VAR check followed, but the goal stood.
It was the kind of decisive contribution Glimt supporters have come to expect from Hauge, who was also identified as a central attacking threat during the club’s Champions League trip to Atlético Madrid.
Once again, Union found an answer. Fuseini, lively after entering the contest, levelled in the 88th minute when his effort took a deflection off Fredrik Bjørkan and flew into the top corner. At 2-2, and 5-5 on aggregate, extra time was required.
Blomberg and Hauge drive Glimt’s attack
The match underlined why Glimt remain so difficult to contain when their wide players attack with confidence. Blomberg carried a direct threat and supplied more than the opening goal, while Hauge repeatedly looked for space around the edge of the Union penalty area.
Glimt did not control every phase. Union’s two equalisers showed that the hosts could be exposed when the match became stretched, particularly once the visitors committed more players forward. Smith offered a route back into the game from distance, while Fuseini gave the Belgian side pace and urgency late in normal time.
Yet Knutsen’s team continued to play forward. That willingness to commit numbers and trust their attacking structure has been central to their recent European progress, including a campaign in which they faced Borussia Dortmund at Signal Iduna Park.
Helmersen’s role was especially important. Before scoring the winner, he had already tested Chambaere and helped create Hauge’s goal. His persistence eventually decided a tie in which neither side was willing to settle for penalties.
Van de Perre dismissal shapes extra time
Glimt played with greater patience once extra time began, taking better care of possession rather than allowing the end-to-end pattern to continue unchecked.
Union entered extra time with ten men after Kamiel Van de Perre received a second yellow in the sixth minute of second-half stoppage time. Chambaere initially kept them in the tie with another vital save in the 114th minute.
Three minutes later, the resistance finally broke in unusual fashion. Odin Bjørtuft met the ball with a header, Massiré Sylla cleared it from the goal line, and the rebound struck Helmersen before finding the net.
It was not a carefully constructed finish, but it rewarded Glimt’s sustained pressure. Union had come back twice and competed throughout an exhausting tie; this time there was too little time left to produce a third response.
What comes next for Bodø/Glimt and Union SG?
Bodø/Glimt now face N.E.C. in the Champions League play-off round. The first leg is scheduled for 19 August in the Netherlands, with the return at Aspmyra on 25 August. The winners will advance to the 36-team league phase.
For Glimt, the objective is clear: recover quickly and carry the confidence from this narrow victory into one final qualifying tie. Their attacking quality was decisive against Union, although the two equalisers also leave defensive details for Knutsen to address.
Union’s Champions League campaign is over, but their European season continues. As defeated participants in the third qualifying round’s league path, the Belgian side move directly into the UEFA Europa League league phase.
