Bayern Munich left Gelsenkirchen with only a point after controlling long stretches of the contest but failing to break down Schalke 04 at the Veltins-Arena.

The goalless draw moves Bayern to four points from two Bundesliga matches, while Schalke collect their first point of the season after a defensive display built around Loris Karius and a compact back line.

Bayern largely played in Schalke’s half. Yet early pressure, a dominant share of possession and a stream of corners never yielded the decisive goal, and Karius’s late interventions ensured the home side held on.

Karius holds firm as Bayern’s pressure goes unrewarded

Bayern set the tone almost immediately. Lennart Karl forced a save in the third minute and Nathaniel Brown tested Karius again in the 15th as the visitors established territorial control early on.

Schalke offered little going forward in the first half, but they did have one notable opening when Adil Aouchiche drew a save in the 36th minute. The hosts also had two penalty appeals waved away before the interval, first after a possible Dayot Upamecano handball and then following a challenge involving Alphonso Davies and Eric Ebimbe.

Vincent Kompany reacted at the break by sending on Harry Kane, then added Jamal Musiala and Michael Olise before the hour as Bayern searched for more precision around the box. The pressure increased, but Schalke’s narrow defensive shape kept closing the central spaces Bayern wanted to attack.

Olise was denied in the 59th minute and Bayern kept returning with set-pieces and second balls. Kane then came closest late on, first with an effort saved in the 82nd minute and then again five minutes later when Karius pushed away his 20-yard strike towards the top-left corner.

Bayern were still forcing the issue in the closing moments, but the final attacks brought no breakthrough.

Bayern dominate the ball but cannot force a breakthrough

The numbers explain why the result will feel frustrating for Bayern. They had 74 per cent of the ball, outshot Schalke 15 to two, recorded six efforts on target and won 11 corners, while the expected goals tally finished at 1.497 to 0.128.

Even so, the match never became a siege of clear chances. Schalke’s compact structure repeatedly cut out passes into dangerous areas, and Bayern often found a blue shirt in the way when they tried to work the final opening.

Kane and Olise both began on the bench as part of Bayern’s rotation, and Musiala’s return after pre-season health setbacks gave the second half an added layer of attacking intent. Those changes lifted the pressure, but they did not alter the scoreline.

Manuel Neuer summed up the pattern afterwards, saying Karius had stopped three major chances and that those saves were the key reason Bayern did not win.

Schalke’s defensive resistance earns a valuable point

Karius was the standout figure, but Schalke’s clean sheet was a collective effort rather than a one-man escape act. The home side stayed narrow, doubled up on Bayern’s attackers and continued to throw bodies into blocks as the pressure rose.

Schalke also won 61 per cent of their duels, a useful measure of how aggressively they protected their box and disrupted Bayern’s rhythm. Robin Gosens said afterwards that Schalke had repeatedly doubled and almost trebled up on Bayern players, with every member of the side going beyond their limits.

Bayern’s run of 12 consecutive Bundesliga wins over Schalke, stretching back to March 2017, ended here, and Bayern also failed to score for the first time in 59 matches.

For Schalke, this was also their first Bundesliga home match in more than three years.

What comes next for Schalke and Bayern?

Schalke return to Bundesliga action away to Union Berlin on Friday 11 September at 19:30 BST.

Bayern’s next league match is against Elversberg on Sunday 13 September at 16:30 BST.

Bayern will leave this match knowing the control was there but the final pass and finish were not. Schalke can take real encouragement from their first point of the season.
