Matt Turner is going to return to the New England Revolution on loan from Lyon according to reports. The move comes because of money problems at Lyon and Turner needs to play regular games. Turner coming back would help his chances with the USMNT before the 2026 World Cup.

  • Lyon’s got money troubles which is why they’re sending Turner on loan.
  • Turner wants more game time to keep his spot with USMNT.
  • The loan should last one year bringing him back to New England Revolution.

Turner’s European Football Journey

Matt Turner, the American keeper who’s done pretty good, is about to come back to Major League Soccer’s New England Revolution. He’s with Lyon right now but looks like he’ll join Revolution for a year on loan. This is happening because Lyon’s having money problems and Turner’s future got kinda shaky after John Textor left as president. So Lyon wants to send Turner back to his old team to save some money while he gets to play more.

Turner’s time in Europe has been up and down really. After he went from New England Revolution to Arsenal in 2022 he mostly sat on the bench. Then he went to Nottingham Forest where he played more but ended up getting benched again. He got loaned to Crystal Palace in 2024 and won the FA Cup even though he didn’t play much. Then he went to Lyon for like 9.1 million dollars earlier this year. But now with Lyon having money troubles Turner’s heading back to where he started in New England.

Strategic Move for World Cup Prospects

Turner going back to New England Revolution isn’t just about Lyon saving money it’s also good for Turner. He’ll probably get to play a lot more which he needs to keep his spot on the USMNT. With the 2026 World Cup coming up playing lots of games in MLS could help him stay the number 1 keeper for the national team. Plus Turner’s really good at stopping shots according to American Soccer Analysis data which will help New England Revolution do better in the league.
