Garth Lagerwey, President and CEO of Atlanta United, has took an indefinite leave of absence for cancer treatment. The timing comes when Atlanta United is having a rough start to the season which puts more pressure on everyone running the club. With Lagerwey gone and the team not doing so good it’s really testing how stable the club is.

  • Garth Lagerwey steps down for cancer treatment.
  • Atlanta United struggles with only two wins in ten games.
  • Owner Arthur Blank says they need to do better as pressure builds up.

Lagerwey’s Leadership and Health Challenges

Garth Lagerwey who’s known for being really good at running soccer teams has said he’s leaving Atlanta United to get treatment for cancer. Before this, he was the General Manager and President of Soccer at Seattle Sounders FC where they won lots of MLS Cups. At Atlanta United FC his record isn’t that great at 28-39-34. Even though he tried real hard, the team just can’t seem to win this season with only two wins in their first ten games. Lagerwey first had to leave in July 2025 cause of his health and now he’s having to do it again.

Atlanta United’s 2025 Season Struggles

Atlanta United is having a real hard time in the 2025 MLS season and they only won two games out of ten matches? Manager Ronny Deila needs to change something up with how the team plays. Big players they signed like Alexey Miranchuk and Miguel Almiron aren’t doing as good as everyone thought they would and people are talking about making changes. Arthur Blank who owns the team went public saying they need to do better which just adds more pressure on everyone running things. The games coming up against Nashville SC and Philadelphia Union are super important if they want to turn things around this season.

Community Support and Response

Everyone in soccer including fans and people who work with Lagerwey are showing lots of support while he deals with his health problems. Everyone knows how good he is at leading and what he’s done for soccer, and the team is really gonna miss him while he’s gone. The whole Major League Soccer community is coming together and sending nice messages on social media to support him. While Atlanta United tries to get through this tough time everyone’s watching to see if the team can pull it together and do better even with all these problems. The team is working real hard to get better and play good to make Lagerwey proud during this hard time.
