João Cancelo’s Barcelona Return: Three-Year Deal Set to Be Signed

Barcelona look close to turning João Cancelo’s latest comeback into something more lasting, with the full-back set to sign a three-year contract on 20 August if the final formalities go through as expected. The move would hand him a first permanent deal at the club after two previous loan spells, landing just days before the start of Barça’s new La Liga campaign.

  • Cancelo is set to sign a three-year deal with Barcelona on 20 August, pending official confirmation from the club.
  • He has terminated his Al Hilal contract and is expected to return as a free agent.
  • The move would mark his third spell at Barcelona, but his first as a permanent signing.

João Cancelo’s Return to Barcelona

João Cancelo arrived in Barcelona on 17 August to complete his return, and the proposed deal now appears to be down to the final details rather than facing any major obstacles.

Cancelo has already made his feelings clear about being back at the club, saying: “I am where I want to be.” His comment reflects his desire to return, even if it is not confirmation that the contract has already been signed.

After a 2-1 friendly win over Al Ahly on 19 August, Hansi Flick’s side are due to face Elche in La Liga on 23 August.

The Free-Agent Route From Al Hilal

Cancelo’s return became possible once he agreed to terminate his Al Hilal contract early, clearing the way for Barcelona to bring him in as a free agent. That removed the need for a transfer fee and helped the move accelerate before the season gets under way.

He will not be arriving short of match action. He has remained active in recent months, making competitive appearances in the Saudi Pro League and AFC Champions League, including an outing for Al Hilal on 14 August.

A First Permanent Barcelona Signing

If completed, this would be Cancelo’s third spell at Barcelona after loan stays in 2023/24 and the second half of the following season.

Cancelo’s second loan ended with Barcelona winning La Liga, which helps explain why the club are ready to turn a temporary arrangement into a longer-term commitment.

The three-year agreement would turn a familiar arrangement into a more stable option heading into the early weeks of the 2026/27 season.
