Julián Álvarez’s Atlético Madrid future: Barcelona link emerges

Julián Álvarez was still part of Atlético Madrid’s first-team picture in Saturday’s 2-2 La Liga draw with Villarreal, even as his long-term future came under fresh scrutiny. Barcelona have emerged as a potential destination if the situation around the forward develops further, but nothing about an exit appears settled at this stage.

  • Álvarez remains involved with Atlético after featuring against Villarreal on 23 August.
  • Barcelona’s interest has persisted despite Atlético’s firm resistance to a sale.
  • Any move would be difficult to complete, with Álvarez understood to be under contract until June 2030.

Julián Álvarez’s current situation at Atlético Madrid

Julián Álvarez remains a key part of Atlético Madrid’s current La Liga setup, with the latest uncertainty around his future drawing added attention. His 2025/26 league return of 29 appearances, eight goals and four assists, along with his 24-minute substitute outing against Villarreal on 23 August, underlined that no departure has been finalised.

Atlético’s public stance has also been clear. The club have maintained that they do not want to sell Álvarez, even amid suggestions that offers in the region of €100 million, €150 million or €200 million would not change their position. That leaves a potential exit looking more like a developing possibility than a foregone conclusion.

Barcelona’s interest in Álvarez

Barcelona are the obvious club to watch as the uncertainty around Álvarez’s future grows. Their interest has not disappeared, and Deco’s meeting in Madrid with Álvarez’s agent, Fernando Hidalgo, points to a desire to keep the move alive after an initial €100 million offer was reportedly turned away.

The move has an obvious footballing appeal for Barcelona. Álvarez would give Barcelona a strong centre-forward option, and he is viewed as the kind of number nine who could fit neatly into Hansi Flick’s plans. Even so, that appeal does not mean an agreement is close, and the link still sits firmly in the category of a potential move rather than an advanced one.

What could shape Álvarez’s next move

Álvarez is understood to be tied to Atlético until June 2030, which gives the Madrid club a powerful hand if this story continues to develop. Any exit would be difficult, expensive and likely contested, especially with Atlético continuing to insist on keeping him rather than showing a readiness to cash in.

There is also an added layer of tension around the case after a disciplinary procedure was opened following Atlético’s complaint over alleged contact between Barcelona and the player. That issue remains unresolved and will not be the sole deciding factor in whether a transfer happens, but it adds another complication to Barcelona’s interest. Barcelona still have reason to keep watching as Álvarez’s next step remains an open question.
