Barcelona had eyed Aymeric Laporte as a possible defensive addition, and while the centre-back was open to the move, the club have now stepped away after finding the conditions too difficult to navigate. Barça are now back in the market for defensive cover after missing out on an experienced option they had seriously considered.

  • Barcelona explored a move for Aymeric Laporte before backing away.
  • Laporte was willing to join Barcelona if a deal could be struck.
  • Athletic Club’s firm stance and the overall conditions made the move too difficult to pursue.
  • An early indication of a fee in the region of €15 million was never an agreed price or final valuation.

Aymeric Laporte’s Barcelona Situation

Aymeric Laporte was one of the defenders Barcelona monitored in their bid to strengthen the backline. The Athletic Club centre-back appealed as an experienced, left-footed option, boasting the kind of build-up quality and leadership that could have perfectly complemented younger defenders such as Pau Cubarsí.

Barcelona had initially been given encouragement that a deal might be possible for around €15 million, which helps explain why the move was explored in the first place. However, that figure never amounted to an agreed price, a release clause, or any settled valuation, and the picture changed once the club looked more closely at the realistic terms of a potential transfer.

Athletic Club’s Firm Stance on Laporte

Athletic Club’s resistance was at the heart of Barcelona’s decision to step away. Laporte is under contract until 2028 and remains an important part of Edin Terzić’s plans, meaning Athletic were in no mood to facilitate a straightforward sale, especially with Barcelona pushing for defensive reinforcements.

That left the operation difficult from both a sporting and financial perspective. The exact numbers surrounding a possible deal have been all over the place, so the safest reading is simply that Athletic’s expectations sat well beyond Barcelona’s comfort zone. Javier Clemente also made it clear he was against Laporte joining Barça, a view that underlined how sensitive any such move would have been, even if it did not represent the club’s official position.

Barcelona’s Defensive Plans After the Setback

Ronald Araújo’s loan move to Liverpool created room for Barcelona to consider bringing in reinforcements. The club must now decide whether to lean on internal cover or reopen their search for another centre-back.

Álvaro Cortés remains one in-house route if Barcelona want to find a solution from within. Ruud Nijstad was also monitored as another centre-back possibility, but no agreement was reached there either, suggesting Barça’s defensive search will stay open a little longer rather than ending with Laporte.
