Football Mourns the Loss of Jimmy Calderwood

Former Dunfermline Athletic and Aberdeen manager Jimmy Calderwood has died at the age of 69. Known for his success in Scottish and Dutch football Calderwood’s career had lots of big achievements and he fought bravely against early-onset dementia.

  • Calderwood took Dunfermline to the 2004 Scottish Cup Final and got them promoted to the Scottish Premier League.
  • At Aberdeen, he got third place in the SPL and made it to the last 32 in the 2007–08 UEFA Cup.
  • His career in Dutch football saw him manage Willem II Tilburg and NEC Nijmegen.

Calderwood’s Impact on Scottish Football

Jimmy Calderwood really changed Scottish football when he was in charge at clubs like Dunfermline Athletic and Aberdeen. When he was boss, Dunfermline got to the 2004 Scottish Cup Final and went up to the Scottish Premier League. At Aberdeen Calderwood got the team to finish third in the SPL and they did really good getting to the last 32 in the 2007–08 UEFA Cup.


People remember his time in Scottish football for what he achieved and how he changed the clubs he managed. Everyone respected Calderwood because he knew his stuff and could get teams playing really well.

Calderwood’s Dutch Football Journey

Before he did good in Scotland, Calderwood was a manager in Dutch football. He was in charge of clubs like Willem II Tilburg NEC Nijmegen and for a bit, Go Ahead Eagles and De Graafschap. When he was in the Netherlands he showed he could do well anywhere and adapt to different types of football.

When Calderwood was in the Netherlands he showed he really knew what he was doing and could get teams playing great which made lots of people respect him.

Personal Struggles and Tributes

Calderwood died in January 2025 after fighting early-onset dementia for a long time which doctors found in 2017. Everyone in football is really sad about losing him and they’re talking about all the good stuff he did in football and how he touched lots of people’s lives.

Lots of people who used to work with him and play for him have said nice things about how much he loved football and how he helped younger players. People remember him for doing great things as a manager but also how brave he was when things got tough.
