Paris St-Germain are set to continue their summer business by finalising a deal for Schalke’s 21-year old defender Thilo Kehrer in a deal worth around £33 million (€37 million), further strengthening the Parisian giants bid for European domination this season.

PSG have already tied up deals for Gianluigi Buffon and the marquee permanent signing of Kylian Mbappe from Monaco. Kehrer has been part of the Schalke academy set-up and leaves the club after six-year under contract with the Bundesliga side.

The German side’s Sporting Director revealed in quotes to the Guardian that the 21-year old was ready to extend his current deal at the club before PSG submitted the £33m bid – with the offer too good to refuse, with Thilo Kehrer’s contract running down in 2019;

In the end we decided to go for the transfer on financial grounds.”

A few weeks ago we had actually agreed a contract extension with Thilo. If this offer from PSG were not to have come through, I’m sure he would have gone ahead with the extension, likewise if we had turned the offer down or in the unlikely event something was to stop this deal going ahead.”

Kehrer’s major honour to-date is helping the German U21 side to the European U21 Championship title – while also turning out in the Bundesliga for Schalke on 45 occasions, scoring four goals in the process. While never playing Champions League football, the defender does have eight Europa League games under his belt.
