Manchester United with Jose Mourinho were ready to launch bid for rival’s captain

In a bit of a transfer revelation, ESPN via The Chronicle states that Manchester United, with Jose Mourinho as manager, were set to launch a big to Newcastle (back in the January window) for their captain Jamaal Lascelles.

Jose Mourinho’s side weren’t up to much defensively and Jose Mourinho was left frustrated last summer at not being able to bring in a number of centre-back targets.

Big name signings were wanted by the now sacked Portuguese boss, such as Inter Milan’s Milan Skriniar and Napoli’s Kalidou Koulibaly, with the latter’s name still being strongly linked with a move to Old Trafford.

Jamaal Lascelles has been impressing since Newcastle returned to the Premier League, and the Magpies captain has been close to an England call-up, as well as links to some of the country’s top clubs, including Chelsea.

Jamaal Lascelles currently has a contract until 2024 with the Magpies and now that Mourinho is gone, it seems United are looking elsewhere, but it’s an interesting insight into what the back-line could have looked like now should the board have let Jose continue on.
